Pet Care in Samui

Whether you’re a new dog parent or fostering for the first time, we’re here to help you give your dog the care they deserve..

  • Diet & Nutrition

A healthy dog starts with good food.

Daily meals: Puppies need 3 meals/day, adults typically 2.

    Food options:

Quality dry kibble (look for meat as the first ingredient)

Cooked chicken, rice, pumpkin, and vegetables can supplement

Avoid overfeeding — follow weight guidelines on food labels

    Avoid these toxic foods:
Chocolate, grapes/raisins, onions, garlic, avocado, macadamia nuts, alcohol, and cooked bones.

Hydration: Fresh water should always be available — especially in Samui's heat.

  • Health & Vet Care

Prevention is key to a long, healthy life.

    Vaccinations (core):

Puppies: Start at 6–8 weeks with boosters every 3–4 weeks

Adults: Annual boosters for rabies, parvo, distemper, and leptospirosis

    Monthly protection:

Flea & tick preventatives (Bravecto, NexGard, etc.)

    Deworming tablets every 1–3 months

    Sterilization:
Highly recommended to prevent unwanted litters and reduce health risks.

Vet visits: Annual checkups and immediately if you notice lethargy, vomiting, skin issues, or weight changes.

  • Training & Socialisation

Well-trained dogs are happy, safe, and confident.

Start early: Training begins the day your dog comes home.

Positive reinforcement: Use treats, praise, and patience — avoid punishment.

Basic commands: Sit, stay, come, down, leave it.

Leash skills: Practice calm walking and reward loose-lead behaviour.

    Socialisation tips:

Expose your dog to people, dogs, motorbikes, and island sounds early

Go slow with shy or nervous dogs — never force interaction

  • Island Living Tips

Caring for dogs in Koh Samui’s tropical climate.

    Heat safety:

Walk early morning or late evening

Avoid hot concrete that can burn paws

Clean water: Offer fresh water regularly on walks and trips

    Skin care:

Check for ticks after walks in long grass or forest areas

Watch for hotspots or sunburn on short-haired breeds

    Soi dog awareness:

Remain calm if a stray dog approaches. Keep your dog close on a tight leash and calmly walk away.

Avoid walking into known packs — choose safe, quiet routes

Most soi dogs are bark-only and not aggressive, but it’s good to stay alert

    Recommended walking areas:

Taling Ngam, Bang Por, and Lipa Noi beaches are peaceful and uncrowded

Chaweng Lake is a lovely 5km loop — a few soi dogs around, but generally safe

Bangrak Hillside for a scenic hike with your pup

    Pet-friendly spots:
Most beach bars are dog-friendly, but dogs should be kept on a leash. Some favorites include:

Elixir, The Garden, Kathy's Cafe, Treehouse, and Coco Beach — though there are many more welcoming venues island-wide.

Dogs don’t just need homes - they need hearts. We’re here to help them find both.
